Kevin Laubengayer always takes advantage of any opportunity he’s given to encourage his 8-year-old daughter, Katerina, to embrace the worlds of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). On July 21, the manufacturing manager for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was one of more than 500 people who attended the inaugural STEM Day for employees’ children at our Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids.

Bob Wood, a senior fellow and director of Head-up Guidance Systems Engineering at our facility in Wilsonville, Oregon, didn’t realize he was nominated for an Avionics Magazine Excellence in Avionics Award. But when the publication’s Global Connected Aircraft Summit in Chantilly, Virginia, concluded late last month, Wood walked away with the publication’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award.

As we look forward in 2015 to the next generation of aircraft with satellite-based connectivity, the hot topic is higher bandwidth as passengers demand similar levels of connectivity on board an aircraft as they have on the ground for their many devices. The existing connectivity is already rapidly changing the utility of aircraft for passengers, especially in business aviation, enabling an office-in-the-sky experience.

For nearly 28 years, I have flown and contributed to the development of Head-up Guidance (HGS™) and Head-up Display (HUD) technology. I’ve spent much of this time creating safety processes, supporting regulatory efforts, supporting flight operations and facilitating operational implementation for aircraft makers and operators.

With EBACE 2015 just a few weeks away, today I found myself reflecting on the tremendous changes we’ve seen in business aviation since attending my first EBACE ten years ago. During the decade we witnessed an all-time peak in new airplane deliveries and flight utilization, felt the headache of a financial crisis, and then pulled up for our industry climb out.

For the third year in a row, Rockwell Collins’ ARINCDirect International Trip Support has received the top ranking in Professional Pilot magazine’s annual PRASE (Preferences Regarding Aviation Services and Equipment) Survey for “Best International Trip Planning.”The ranking is a result of a survey completed by more than 1,300 of the magazine’s subscribers.

Rockwell Collins has been named Airbus’s top Cabin Supplier of Buyer-Furnished Equipment and best In-Flight Entertainment Supplier for 2014. The awards were handed out on opening day of the 2015 Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany.
