In 2011, Rockwell Collins was awarded the contract to upgrade the KC-10 to meet CNS/ATM requirements. The KC-10 CNS/ATM program includes the integration of a new Flight Management System (FMS) with military flight planning (including tanker-unique patterns), new Inertial Navigation Units (INU) integrated with the existing analog autopilot.

Rockwell Collins has upgraded more than 600 tanker/transport aircraft to meet worldwide CNS/ATM mandates. With the Rockwell Collins Flight2™ system avionics upgrade, the C/KC-135 is able to transit all civil and military airspace unrestricted, with the KC-135 accumulating more than 1 million flight hours of global, operational experience, including combat zones.

KC-135 GATM Upgrade

All 419 C/KC-135 aircraft have been successfully modified, enabling them to operate in airspace throughout the world. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) C/KC-135 Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) fleet was the first legacy mobility fleet in the Department of Defense to be GATM certified worldwide. The achievements of the program were recognized when the GATM team received the Colonel Joseph B. Duckworth Annual USAF Instrument Award in 2005, recognizing the team for its achievement in the field of instrument flying.
