It wasn’t long after Joy Christian joined Rockwell Collins in December of 2014 that she was deployed as part of her duties as a Petty Officer First Class in the U.S. Navy Reserve. The senior service center technician — based out of Rockwell Collins' Atlanta, Georgia, facility — said that deployment taught her a lot about her new company and her managers.

“Right away everyone was so helpful,” said Christian. “My managers kept in constant contact with me and I was given all the information I needed regarding my position without having to seek it out.”

Having similar experiences in subsequent deployments, Christian felt it was time Rockwell Collins and two of her managers in Atlanta were recognized for their support of veterans and employees in active military services. In January, she nominated Gregg Ballew, principal manager of the Avionics Service Center, and Bill Ford, manager for Service Center Operations, for the Employer Support Guard and Reserve’s (ESGR) Patriot Award.

ESGR, part of the U.S. Department of Defense office, promotes cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers. The Patriot Award is given to individual supervisors who provide exemplary support to their National Guard and Reserve employees through a wide range of measures, such as providing flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment and granting leaves of absence if necessary.

Ballew and Ford were informed they had been selected to receive this recognition and were presented with the award at a luncheon in March.

“I was very surprised but very honored,” said Ballew. “The Atlanta office has a lot of veterans and active military employees, so we always do our best to be supportive of those employees and the important work they do for our military.”

“Gregg and Bill go above and beyond what they need to do,” said Christian. “I was happy to see them get this honor.”
