Raytheon Corporation's Aircraft Integration Systems Division, Greenville, Texas, selected Rockwell Collins to design and manufacture
a Level 5+ Flight Training Device for the Airborne Standoff Radar platform (ASTOR). The ASTOR FTD is an integral component
of the integrated ground based training system under development for Raytheon Systems LTD, UK for the British Ministry of
Defence.
The ASTOR platform is based on the Bombardier Global Express (GEX) jet aircraft modified for operations as an AEW platform.
The modified aircraft incorporates multiple tactical system configuration changes to the radar, navigation, sensor, and communications
systems of the standard Global Express
The ASTOR FTD is used to support systems familiarization and flight operations training for MOD flight crews. The design leverages
many aspects of Rockwell Collins's Level D Full Flight Simulator experience and technologies in anticipation of potential
future system upgrades including out-the-window visual displays and 6 DOF motion cueing system. To facilitate combined operations
training, the FTD directly interfaces and links to the ASTOR Mission Crew Trainer (MCT) and Ground Station Training module.
