Rockwell Collins' head up displays (HUD) enhance mission effectiveness by improving pilot situational awareness. The HUD on
tactical aircraft is positioned above the instrument glare shield and allows the pilot to look forward onto a transparent
screen, which is called the optical combiner. The HUD on a military transport is positioned above the pilot's head and projected
on a combiner hung from the top of the windshield. All of the critical flight information normally viewed on the head down
displays is also superimposed on the combiner. This gives the pilot the option of flying "heads up" by viewing flight information
and the real world scene simultaneously.
From the early development of traditional HUDs to the wider field-of-view holographic HUD, Rockwell Collins has been a pacesetter
in the design, development and production of the most accurate, compact and high performance HUDs in the world.
Fixed Wing Fighter Rockwell Collins supplies a conventional HUD with an instrument field of view (IFOV) of 16.4° x 16.4° to the U.S. Navy and
the U.S. Marine Corps for the F/A-18C/D, E/F.
Rockwell Collins provides a Wide Field of View Holographic HUD to the U.S. Air Force and international users for the F-15E/K
and to the U.S. Navy for the F-14D. The Holographic HUD provides crisp stroke symbology displaying navigation, steering, flight
situation and attack cues easily viewed in the brightest of daylight. It uses modern holographic combiners to provide see-through
transmission and contrast.
Internationally, Rockwell Collins maintains a strong presence by equipping the Wide Field of View Holographic HUD to Sweden
for the JAS-39 Gripen.
Tanker/Transport/Mission Rockwell Collins' Head-up Guidance Systems (HGS®) is standard for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps C-130J transport,
the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) and the C-27J transport. For these programs, dual HUDs are used as the primary flight
display for the aircraft, allowing the head down displays to be used for other tactical display duties. Other military applications
of the HGS are the P-8 Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA) and the C-40A/B/C transport aircraft that use wide field of view
systems based on the Boeing commercial 737.
Space Shuttle Rockwell Collins developed and designed the NASA Space Shuttle HUD, which first flew in 1981. Due to our expertise in building
rugged avionics for demanding environments, Rockwell Collins was able to deliver a quality product on time. The Shuttle HUD
solution consists of the HUD and Display Processor (DP), with ten circuit card assemblies per DP.
