The F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is the next-generation strike aircraft designed for the U.S. Air Force, U.S.
Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and several allied nations. A joint, multi-national acquisition program, JSF will be the most advanced
multi-role fighter in flight, representing a new family of affordable, stealthy combat aircraft. The JSF is designed to ultimately
replace the F-16 Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, AV-8B Harrier and F/A-18 Hornet.
Rockwell Collins supplies the JSF with communication solutions, including Ultra High Frequency/Very High Frequency (U/VHF)
capabilities and L-band Preselectors.
Vision Systems International (VSI), a joint venture between Rockwell Collins and Elbit Systems Ltd. of Israel, is developing the Helmet Mounted Display
(HMD) for the JSF. VSI's HMD offers a compact, versatile, lightweight and extremely rugged display with low power consumption.
The JSF HMD is a binocular off-the-visor display providing the pilot with a large field-of-view video/calligraphic image to
both eyes. The HMD is readable under all ambient light conditions from full sunlight to dark night and uses two transmissive
Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) providing high resolution Super Extended Graphics Array (SXGA) imagery. VSI's effort for the
JSF will also provide an array of pilot flight gear, including the oxygen mask and chemical/biological hazard protection.
