See the difference between ride-quality and severe turbulence
Turbulence causes more injuries on commercial aircraft - to both passengers and crew - than any other weather phenomena. And,
it is particularly difficult to detect because it can occur in almost any weather system - often without warning.
In a 2004 head-to-head competition, Rockwell Collins won the contract to work with NASA to bring enhanced turbulence detection
to the market. This technology detects very low-reflectivity turbulence compared to previous generation Doppler turbulence
capability. Rockwell Collins then worked with the FAA to develop certification standards for this new capability.
But we didn't stop there. The MultiScan engineers then developed a new, patented capability that differentiates between ride-quality
turbulence and severe turbulence. So now flight crews can know if upcoming turbulence events are dangerous or simply inconvenient.
Only MultiScan Hazard Detection Weather Radar displays two levels of turbulence. Speckled magenta areas indicate ride-quality
turbulence, while solid magenta indicates severe turbulence.
