The Head-up Guidance System is incorporated into the airplane with reliability you can count on. The HGS utilizes flight information and prioritizes which sensor(s) will be used to generate the display. It also utilizes FMS flight plan and runway information to reduce pilot workload. To assure system integrity, the HGS compares the different sources of information and displays any discrepancies.

The flight Director Mode annunications are displayed on the HGS combiner similar to the head-down primary flight display. A two-way conection to the central maintenance system ensures that the HGS faults and failures are correctly captured and reported. Software is kept up-to-date using a field-loadable software data loading system via the central data loading port.

The HGS can be controlled by either a dedicated HGS Control Panel (HCP) or via the Multipurpose Control Display Unit (MCDU). The pilot enters data and selects the desired mode of operation through these control mechanisms. Status and warning annunciations are displayed on the HGS combiner to the pilot or on the HGS Annunciator Panel (HAP) to the right-seat pilot. When an Enhanced Vision system (EVS) is installed on the airplane, the HGS displays this enhanced vision image on the combiner in video (raster) format.
