Problem: The customer needed an affordable way to upgrade their fixed wing fleets to add Link 16 for real-time situational awareness and mission tasking. They wanted a software only solution that could be hosted on spare processing resources within their existing mission computer.

The solution: OpenEdge

Application services: OpenEdge is utilized to provide a robust set of 6016C Change Notice 1 messages for Common Tactical Operational Picture, Free Text Collaboration, Mission Assignments, Platform Status Reporting and Flight Path updates.

Presentation services: OpenEdge provides an ASN.1 output stream to the mission software in the host processor. The host mission software is responsible for creating the display formats using the existing cockpit displays.

Data link services: OpenEdge interfaces with a SHAR Terminal

Processing: OpenEdge is hosted on a COTS PowerPC VME Single Board Computer running LynxOS 4.0 installed in the existing mission computer.

Platform Interface Services Utilized: OpenEdge utilizes present position information from the A/C MIL-STD-1553 Bus
