Honeywell and Rockwell Collins to offer integrated guided weapons technologies
- New entity will be known as Integrated Guidance Systems LLC
- MEMS and GPS to guide advanced Precision Weapons
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa and MINNEAPOLIS (November 03, 2005) - Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL) and Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the formation of a limited liability company that will offer customers a new series of integrated precision
guidance solutions for precision guided weapons.
The new entity, Integrated Guidance Systems LLC, is a Honeywell International/Rockwell Collins 50/50 joint venture. While
offering a new integrated series of guidance products, both Honeywell and Rockwell Collins will continue to offer their existing
Micro Electronic Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) products that are used on current precision
weapons.
Integrated Guidance Systems LLC combines the strengths of two defense industry leaders. The LLC will provide deeply integrated
guidance and navigation solutions, enabling its customers to meet new and emerging enhanced performance requirements.
"Rockwell Collins' GPS receivers and Honeywell's MEMS Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) are complementary technologies that
will deliver very small, low-cost, highly precise guided weapons systems," said Ron Hornish, Vice President and General Manager
of Sensor Systems for Rockwell Collins. "Each company is applying research and development efforts to integrate these two
technologies in order to produce a superior total solution."
New guidance offerings will be made possible through the combination of Rockwell Collins' military GPS receiver technology
and Honeywell's MEMS IMU and navigation processing technologies using an advanced coupling process called Deep Integration
that increases navigation accuracy in GPS jammed or denied environments.
"The lightweight, rugged designs will be ideally suited for existing and emerging precision guided missiles, munitions, and
gun-launched projectiles," said Joel Houlton, Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell's Missiles and Munitions business
unit. "And with the Deep Integration of Honeywell and Rockwell Collins technologies, this new LLC will reduce hardware content
on precision munitions. This will also yield increased reliability compared with current offerings in today's demanding tactical
environments."
The LLC combines intellectual property of the two companies to create best-value solutions for its customers. It builds on
the Deeply Integrated Guidance and Navigation Unit (DI-GNU) development and solid track record of successful guided flight
tests.
"We are excited about the game-changing potential of our jointly developed products. In addition to the innovative development
capabilities of our two global companies, we also offer world-class high-volume manufacturing facilities and world-wide support
infrastructure. We are pleased to announce the formation of Integrated Guidance Systems LLC, and we stand ready to respond
to our customers' needs," Houlton said.
