Rockwell Collins selected by U.S. Army for MCAP III program

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (August 05, 2004) - Rockwell Collins, along with AAI and Whitney, Bradley & Brown (WBB), was recently awarded a contract from the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) for the Manned/Unmanned Common Architecture Program Phase III (MCAP III).

“The Army is breaking new ground with programs that reduce logistical demands,” said Woody Hogle, vice president and general manager of Integrated Systems for Rockwell Collins Government Systems. “Rockwell Collins is assisting the Army to achieve its vision of interoperability and commonality by developing and implementing open architecture mission processing systems for ground vehicles, helicopters and UAVs.

“MCAP III will develop and demonstrate an avionics architecture for Army unmanned aircraft that is common to mission processing systems currently under development for Army Helicopters and Future Combat System (FCS) Ground Vehicles.  Through MCAP III and other programs Rockwell Collins is helping to speed the effort of cascading equipment and operations to transform Army aviation.”

Under this contract Rockwell Collins will perform systems engineering activities to define a common computing and network architecture with application to Army Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) including the Shadow 200, Unmanned Combat Armed Rotorcraft (UCAR), A-160 Hummingbird and Fire Scout.  As part of the agreement, Rockwell Collins will deliver mission processor prototypes and perform a laboratory demonstration on the Shadow 200 platform of several applications including Live HDTV Video Transmission, 'See-and-Avoid' autonomous operation, Automatic Target Cueing, Backup Automatic Target Recognition and Passive Target Ranging.

By taking the personal computer industry’s open systems architecture approach and applying it to avionics and communications products, Rockwell Collins is shifting the paradigm for providing new avionics and communications technologies to the military and aerospace industry.  Examples of Rockwell Collins open architecture solutions include the U.S. Army Special Operations Forces’ MH-47, MH-60 and A/MH-6 helicopter fleets, the U.S. Air Force C/KC-135 Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) program, the U.S. Navy’s E-6B, as well as the Army’s Future Combat System (FCS).
