Rockwell Collins building receives Gold certification under LEED®

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (October 20, 2008) - The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has recognized a Rockwell Collins newly constructed building in Cedar Rapids with its Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold Certification.

This certification represents the first building in Iowa to reach Gold under version 2.2 of LEED. Only 25 buildings in the U.S. have achieved Gold under 2.2., and only three in Iowa have earned it under the older version 2.1.

"This achievement was possible through a total team effort involving Rockwell Collins and OPN Architects, Ryan Companies, Alliant Energy, The Weidt Group®, Siemens and KJWW Engineering," said Jeff Moore, senior vice president, Operations, for Rockwell Collins. "The collaborative work on this project resulted in a low-cost, quality green building constructed in a short period of time, and advances our objective of not only sustaining, but improving our environment."

OPN provided the architectural expertise on the project, Ryan Companies built the structure, Alliant Energy and The Weidt Group® provided energy modeling, Siemens installed the climate control system and KJWW Engineering consulted with the team on the mechanical systems for the project.

Building 130, which houses engineering operations for a portion of Rockwell Collins' Government Systems business, was completed in December 2006 after seven months of construction. It is a pre-engineered steel building constructed with 68 percent recycled content. During the project, 99 percent of the construction waste was recycled.

The building features 40 percent water use reduction, heat harvesting using heated lab air for exterior window conditioning, outdoor air delivery monitoring and carbon dioxide indoor air quality sensors, and at least 35 percent of green space was left for placement of 100 native trees and shrubs. The LEED Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.
