TAROM Romanian Airlines selects Rockwell Collins avionics, cabin systems

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 08, 2006) - TAROM Romanian Airlines has selected Rockwell Collins to provide a comprehensive avionics package featuring eight critical elements, as well as in-flight entertainment and moving map information systems for passengers on their new Airbus A318 aircraft. Deliveries of the four aircraft will begin in November 2006.

The avionics package features Rockwell Collins' award-winning WXR-2100 MultiScan Weather Radar, which is the first and only radar that analyzes and determines actual weather hazards, not simply atmospheric moisture content. MultiScan is a fully automatic, hands-free airborne radar system with over three years of operational experience that reduces pilot workload and enhances safety and passenger comfort by minimizing unexpected turbulence encounters, and provides optimal clutter free weather detection from the nose of the aircraft to 320 nautical miles.

Other Rockwell Collins avionics chosen by TAROM include: the ADF-900 Automatic Direction Finder, DME-900 Distance Measuring Equipment, HFS-900D High Frequency System, CPL-920D Coupling Unit, VHF-2100 Very High Frequency Transceiver, the GLU920 Multi Mode Receiver, the VOR900 VOR/Marker Receiver and data link.

In addition, the airline selected Rockwell Collins' Programmable Audio Video Entertainment System (PAVES®) and the Airshow 4200 moving map information system.

The PAVES system selected by TAROM provides passengers overhead video on 8.4 inch retractable liquid crystal displays featuring wide viewing angles and crisp, bright picture quality. The system offers up to 25 channels of high-fidelity digital in-seat audio programming. PAVES enables airlines to provide passengers a variety of entertainment options that utilize available flying time.

Rockwell Collins Airshow 4200 offers a full-featured multimedia platform, incorporating a wide variety of capabilities, including 3-D route maps, real-time news feeds, connecting gate information, and points-of-interest media libraries. It captures real-time flight information from the aircraft's flight management computer, long-range navigation system, and aircraft communication systems. The Airshow 4200 can use the on-board ACARS connection to retrieve current airport terminal information.

TAROM's relationship with Rockwell Collins dates back to 1970, when the company initially provided TAROM with communication systems for its Boeing 707 and BAC 1-11 aircraft. Throughout the next three decades Rockwell Collins continued to supply avionics solutions for TAROM's growing fleet. Rockwell Collins' latest solution for the Airbus A318 represents the most comprehensive offering yet for TAROM.

TAROM Romanian Air Transport, the national flag carrier of Romania, as well as an EASA 145 and FAA 145 approved maintenance provider for Boeing, Airbus and ATR aircraft, has been serving the Romanian and international market for more than 50 years. The current Tarom fleet includes nine Boeing 737 aircraft that offer passengers a high standard of service with IFE audio, video and moving map offerings, as well as ATR 42 aircraft.
