Kaiser Electro-Optics Develops Integrated Display Solution for Javelin
CARLSBAD, CA (June 11, 2001) - Kaiser Electro-Optics Inc., a Rockwell Collins company, has developed the XL Display Engine. The XL Display Engine incorporates
a display panel, optics, illumination and drive electronics in one compact package improving display system integration. It
is in operation in the Javelin Command Launch Unit, which is a portable, antitank missile launcher trainer developed by ECC.
The XL Display Engine uses active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) technology to achieve high quality color performance
and contrast. A color additive optical configuration is utilized to increase the pixel fill factor. A wide color gamut is
achieved by illuminating the Extended Graphics Array (XGA) Display Panel with light emitting diode backlights. The backlight
system provides an efficient compact source of highly saturated color primaries.
In addition, the XL Display Controller Electronics accept standard XGA analog video with a 60 Hz frame rate and generate the
control/timing signals as required to drive the individual AMLCDs.
Kaiser Electro-Optics Inc., located in Carlsbad, California, was acquired by Rockwell Collins in December 2000. It designs
and manufactures a wide range of optical products for technically demanding applications in medicine, aerospace and defense.
The company's products include sophisticated, head-mounted displays and electro-optical systems.
Rockwell Collins, with headquarters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, designs, produces, markets and supports communication and aviation
electronics for commercial, military and government customers. The business employs approximately 17,500 people worldwide.
