Rockwell Collins Provides Global Positioning System Equipment for U.K. BOWMAN Program
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (August 02, 2001) - Rockwell Collins has been selected by CDC Systems U.K., Ltd., a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), to provide embedded
and handheld military Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense BOWMAN program.
Rockwell Collins will provide more than 37,000 GPS receivers and accessories, at a contract value of more than $86 US million.
The BOWMAN program will deliver the British Army’s next generation tactical communications system and comprises secure voice/data
radio and intercom equipment, computers, a tactical internet and system management software. The GPS equipment will be built
in the United States and U.K., installed in more than 20,000 vehicles, ships and aircraft, and fielded for use by 60,000 personnel.
Delivery of Collins new third-generation handheld Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR)-III and Miniature PLGR Engine
(MPE-S) equipment under the BOWMAN program will begin in early 2002 and continue over five years. The units provide high-performance
position, velocity and time (PVT) in a jamming environment, and include fast Direct-Y acquisition and area navigation functions.
They are more compact than earlier generation units, require reduced power consumption and provide increased performance for
the most demanding navigation applications.
The PLGR-III and MPE-S incorporate the Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) for advanced security. SAASM enhances
navigation security by incorporating a next-generation Precise Positioning Service (PPS) security module.
Rockwell Collins was first in the industry to receive security approval for production deliveries of the Key Data Processor
(KDP) II-based SAASM.
Since developing the first GPS production equipment in the early 1980’s, Rockwell Collins has delivered more than 200,000
airborne, handheld and embedded GPS receivers worldwide.
Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL) is a world leader in the design, production and support of communications and aviation electronics
solutions for commercial and government customers worldwide. The company employs a global workforce of 17,500 people and has
estimated FY2001 sales of approximately $2.9 billion. Additional information is available at www.rockwellcollins.com.
