Rockwell Collins Offers Advanced Data Link Communications for Regional Airline Operators

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 13, 2002) - Rockwell Collins is introducing a new generation of data link equipment designed to meet the needs of the regional airline market. Part of the Collins Pro Line 21 family of CNS Sensors, the CMU-4000 Communications Management Unit and VHF-4000 VHF Data Radio will be available by the first quarter of 2003.

The new Collins VHF-4000 transceiver can be combined with the Collins CMU-900 Communications Management Unit or the new CMU-4000 to provide timely and reliable digital data communications. Both systems provide VDL (VHF Data Link) Mode 2 air/ground data link communication, including ACARS messaging, automatic out-off-on-in (OOOI) times, position reporting and airline operational communications. VDL Mode 2 decreases frequency congestion by increasing the data communication rate from 2.4 Kbps to 31.5 Kbps and will be required for future air traffic data link applications.

In addition, flight crews can request and receive messages such as clearances, flight plan updates, weather data, diversion and emergency reports and passenger lists. Regional operators can tailor the system with application-specific menus and messages to further enhance efficiency and optimize operations. The system also supports the automatic downlink of engine and fuel performance data, which can be used to reduce maintenance and operating costs.

CMU software is partitioned to allow easy customization of data link applications. The Airline Operational Control (AOC) application software is certification-independent and user-programmable. CMU software updates may be performed on board the aircraft using an ARINC 615 data loader.

The system is controlled using the existing flight management system control display unit (CDU) or through the Collins CDU-2500 dedicated data link control.
