Rockwell Collins Demonstrates Wireless Connectivity on PAVES at WAEA
SEATTLE (September 24, 2002) - Rockwell Collins is demonstrating wireless connectivity with its PAVES® inflight entertainment (IFE) system for single-aisle
aircraft during the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) annual conference and exhibition being held this week in
Seattle, Washington.
PAVES will be the first single-aisle IFE product to offer a wireless connection. The system uses the Collins Integrated Information
System (I²S) to connect airline passengers using real-time data streams between air and ground. The open architecture system,
based on proven technology, enables bi-directional wireless distribution throughout the cabin.
"Rockwell Collins is proud to demonstrate wireless connectivity for the industry-leading PAVES system, known for its reliability
and functionality," said Dan Bergen, director, IFE product marketing, Rockwell Collins. "The combination of PAVES and I²S
provides maximum flexibility for passengers and a value-based product for the airlines."
When interfaced with a third-party air-to-ground connectivity service provider, the wireless cabin local area network can
offer airline customers Internet access, Intranet functionality and e-mail, allowing passengers the ability to check on car,
hotel and flight reservations from their seats. Passengers can browse the Internet using their own 802.11b wireless-compatible
laptops and personal electronic devices, without phone or Ethernet ports.
The Collins I²S system also supports airline administration with crew scheduling, fuel records, and passenger manifests by
incorporating those functions into a single data management system. This allows airline operational efficiency during gate
turn-around through improved communications and information transfer systems.
The PAVES system was the first programmable audio/video entertainment system for single-aisle aircraft. The system is currently
installed on more than 500 aircraft and has been enhanced to reduce power consumption and weight. New features and functionality
include new retractable monitors; a completely redesigned user interface that allows for simple one-touch operation; in-seat
DVD functionality which can be integrated with its new Audio Distribution System (ADS) allowing passengers access to 22 standard
audio channels and overhead video soundtracks; and backCHANNEL™ interactivity, providing passengers access to interactive
entertainment and games.
