Qantas Airways Takes Delivery of Boeing 747-400 ER Equipped with Rockwell Collins Avionics and Cabin Entertainment Systems
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (November 05, 2002) - Qantas Airways has taken delivery of its first Boeing 747-400ER equipped with Rockwell Collins avionics and inflight entertainment
(IFE) systems. The aircraft features Rockwell Collins' new active matrix liquid crystal flight displays, MultiScan™ Weather
Radar, a full suite of communication and navigation sensors in the flight deck, and the Collins Total Entertainment System
(TES™) IFE system in the cabin. Qantas has six firm orders for the B747-400ER with options for four additional aircraft.
The Qantas B747-400ER was the certification platform for Collins WXR-2100 MultiScan weather radar. The new fully automatic
radar utilizes multiple-tilt angles and scan patterns to provide an optimum display of weather from the nose of the aircraft
to 320 nm. Proprietary ground clutter suppression algorithms provide an essentially clutter-free display. The result is more
complete information for weather hazard avoidance and a significant reduction in pilot workload.
Also certified on the Qantas B747-400ER, the 8 x 8-inch DU-7001 AMLCD flight display is now standard for all forward fit 747-400
aircraft. The new display features advanced graphics capabilities to support future options including a vertical situation
display, airport surface maps and electronic checklists. With the addition of a video card the display can support advanced
video capabilities such as synthetic vision or video surveillance systems. In addition to improved functionality, the Rockwell
Collins AMLCD offers significant improvements in life cycle costs over traditional cathode ray tube displays.
The Qantas avionics package includes the Collins Multimode Receiver (MMR). The GLU-920 MMR is an integrated unit that provides
the aircraft's primary position, velocity and time reference and enables precision landing capability. It offers instrument
landing system (ILS) and high-integrity satellite-based positioning for navigation and future landing functions, and offers
growth to support microwave landing system capability. The Collins MMR can meet future air traffic management requirements
while offering commonality across fleet types. Also included is the Collins CMU-900 communication management unit and VHF-920
transceiver enabling high-speed data messaging for flight plan updates with growth to controller-pilot data link communication
capability.
The Collins TES offers customers an extremely flexible, totally digital system built on a proven, interactive platform. The
open architecture and modular design provides a smooth upgrade path from distributed video to true audio and video on demand
(AVOD) and beyond. This plug-and-play capability enables quick and easy upgrades without changing or replacing wires, distribution
or seat electronics. Installed on over 250 aircraft, TES offers passengers crystal-clear viewing, revolutionary passenger
control and integrated telephone usage.
