Engineers Week focuses children on today’s technology
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (February 16, 2009) - Getting kids interested in how science and math apply to real-world technology is the focus of Rockwell Collins' annual celebration
of Engineers Week (EWeek), Feb. 14-20.
"Children use and see the latest technology every day and we want them to explore the careers of engineers who make that happen,"
says Cindy Dietz, community relations manager at Rockwell Collins. "EWeek activities help inspire the next generation of engineers
through career awareness and hands-on activities."
Families can help begin the EWeek celebration with Science Day at the Iowa Children's Museum Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. at Coral Ridge Mall. Rockwell Collins will sponsor free admission to the museum and volunteers will guide kids through
science and engineering activities. The event is open to the public.
Rockwell Collins will also host "Introduce a Girl to Engineering" for a seventh year. This program pairs female engineers
with eighth-grade girls from area middle schools. On Monday, Feb. 16, and Friday, Feb. 20, volunteers will give tours, presentations
and equipment demonstrations to show girls engineering career possibilities.
The Iowa Engineering Society (IES) Career Guidance Event, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Jefferson
High School. The event will feature display booths and networking opportunities for high school students interested in engineering
careers and is open to the public.
EWeek will also include Design Squad activities at various Cedar Rapids elementary schools throughout the week. Design Squad
is a PBS reality television show that features teen-agers who use engineering principles to design creative solutions to unique
problems.
Rockwell Collins teams with the following organizations to provide these activities to the Corridor: Cedar Rapids Chapter
Iowa Engineering Society, Heartland International Council on Systems Engineering, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers,
National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Society of Women Engineers and the American
Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics.
