OVERVIEW
The Rockwell Collins VP-116 offers a unique combination of voice privacy
and excellent voice quality and is fully compatible with narrowband communications
channels including UHF, VHF, HF-SSB, and telephone. The VP-116 is a state-of-the-art
version of its predecessor, the VP-110.
DESCRIPTION
High voice privacy is provided by a patented combination of time division
and frequency scrambling. The scrambling process is implemented entirely with
digital techniques and is controlled by a proprietary non-linear algorithm.
This algorithm uses a 64-bit key variable which provides 1019 different
combinations. Up to eight key variables may be stored in the VP-116 at one
time, allowing flexibility of key management. The multiple key variables may
be used for different time periods for different nets. Reliable Synchronization
VP-116 performance is further enhanced by the synchronization provisions.
The transmitting and receiving units are synchronized by Frequency Shift Keyed
(FSK) data at the beginning of each transmission. To assure that the synchronization
process is highly reliable even in the presence of such disturbances as noise,
short fades, and delay distortion, extensive data forward error correction
and interleaved coding are used. The result is a probability of synchronization
in excess of 99 percent over channels usable for voice communications.
System Compatibility
The VP-116 has analog audio interfaces for easy integration into a wide
variety of communications systems. Transmit audio, receive audio, and push-to-talk
key are the only three signals from the communications system that need to
be routed through the VP-116.
Simple To Use
In the clear mode, both transmit and receive audio signals bypass the
voice privacy circuits to provide clear voice transmission and reception.
In the privacy mode, if a private signal is not being processed, any clear
signals received will automatically bypass the voice privacy circuits to provide
clear voice reception. If station "X" has the VP-116 set to secure mode and
station "Y" tries to communicate with station "X" in the clear mode, station
"X" will hear station "Y" in the clear and can then switch to clear mode and continue
communicating without interruption.
Private reception and transmission are only possible when a (preprogrammed)
valid key variable is selected. Operators can select any one of eight key variables with the "KEY" switch
on the control. If two (or more) stations are communicating in the clear and
decide to go secure, they select a common key and then continue their communication
in private. Alternately, the stations may have a predetermined key on which
to call each other and can use it to maintain a totally private link. The "Public Key" mode completely eliminates the need for a secret key
to be common to both stations in order for them to communicate in private.
