OVERVIEW

The Rockwell Collins Integrated Processing Center (IPC) is the primary integrating component of the Flight2 architecture and another example of the scalability of the Flight2 system. The IPC is a modular processing and data networking system that can host multiple mission, flight management, or display management processing functions while providing extensive functional growth for additional applications.

The IPC consists of reusable, common elements that were designed using open system standards/industry standards and complies with numerous commercially supported standards including IEEE 802.3 Ethernet, Peripheral Component Interface (PCI), PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) per IEEE 1386, OpenGL, and POSIX. The IPC's open architecture features enable the integration of legacy sub-systems, as well as, providing the ability to host 3rd party developed hardware and software applications.

The IPC (IPC-7000 series) has been selected for, and is being flown on the USAF KC-135. It will also be integrated as part of the International C-130, CN-235 and J-Stars upgrades. The ruggedized version of the IPC (IPC-8600 series) has been Integrated in Common Army Architecture (CAAS).

DESCRIPTION

The Rockwell Collins Integrated Processing Center provides a cost effective, adaptable core processing capability and is the primary integrating component of the Flight2 architecture. The architecture and modular components of the IPC share common technology developed to serve all three markets (Air Transport, Business and Regional, and Government) addressed by Rockwell Collins businesses.

The IPC provides multiple modular processing resources that are interfaced to an avionics quality Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) that is compliant with commercial standards and data protocols. The Ethernet backplane provides high bandwidth for transfer of large amounts of information required for present and future avionics needs. Modules can be installed to interface with MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, analog and discrete data. The Ethernet LAN can be bridged to fiber channel or other commercial networks simply by adding an optional PMC mezzanine card. Additionally, display modules can be added with a choice of analog video, SMPTE 259, SEMPTE 292 or fiber channel outputs to the system displays.

The IPC is well suited for complex and extensive avionics integration jobs on large platforms. A high integrity real time operating system allows multiple applications to be hosted on each processor as independent virtual machines. The robust partitioning implementation fully complies with civil certification standards including RTCA DO-178B. The IPC complies with Open System Standards/Industry Standards including IEEE 802.3 Ethernet, Peripheral Component Interface (PCI), PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) per IEEE 1386, and POSIX.

IPC-7010

The IPC modular cabinet architecture consists of a cabinet populated with a series of Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs) including a:

  • Common Computing Module (CCM)
  • Data Switching Module (DSM)
  • Power and Environmental Module (PEM)
  • Input/Output Concentrator Module (IOC)

CCM-7010

The CCM module is a high performance, general purpose computer utilizing a family of Power PC Processors. Each CCM module is a combination of hardware and software capable of hosting multiple applications at different criticality levels. The Common Processing Resource (CPR) which is coupled to a LAN bus node to support a redundant LAN connection to the system LAN hub providing a high-speed interface to the LAN node from the processor.

DSM-7010

The DSM module includes a Local Area Network (LAN) switching function for the Ethernet LAN in a hub and spoke configuration. This architecture supports critical avionics data transfer, full duplex operation, low latency with required determinism, and provides growth to support increased data transfer rates. A dual switch configuration is available to increase system fault tolerance

PEM-7010 / 7015

The PEM module is comprised of Dual Power Conditioning Units (PCUs) with power line transient protection and load-shed capability to minimize power requirements during emergency battery operation. The power supplies are designed to be independent, so failures occurring within one power supply do not affect the function of the other power supply. Each power supply has the capability to support the IPCs full load, with load sharing provided during normal operation. Both 115VAC, 400 Hz 3 Phase (PEM-7010) and 115VAC, 400 Hz Single Phase (PEM-7015) power supply models are available.

IOC-7010

The IOC module interfaces to standard legacy ARINC 429 interfaces, discrete I/O, and provides a Real Time clock function. ARINC receivers and transmitters are easily configured in support of future upgrades.

TYPICAL SYSTEM

The IPC configuration for each specific aircraft platform is achieved through a building-block approach, which uses a suite of modules that are standard components across the Rockwell Collins business units. These modules perform centralized application processing as well as input/output (I/O) data concentration from peripheral subsystems and devices. An avionics-qualified dual-redundant, full duplex 100 base-TX Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) configured in a hub-and spoke topology forms the next-generation data transfer system for all inter- and intra-IPC data transfers.

Rockwell Collins has several software products that serve as non-developmental items/commercial off-the-shelf (NDI/COTS) building blocks in the IPC including:

  • Commercial Flight Management function
  • Military Flight Management and communication management functions
  • Mission Management functions
  • Display processing
  • I/O data concentration and server functions
  • Sensor control
  • Centralized maintenance
