OVERVIEW

Global Navigation and Landing Unit Background

The GNLU family of Multi-Mode Receivers supports applications requiring an autoland capability. These products provide air carriers the means of protecting their all weather landing capability in an evolving airspace environment. Inherent in the fully monitored, high integrity design, is the growth path from ILS to MLS, and GLS precision landings. This modular approach provides a precision landing system with a minimum of impact to the airframe.

DESCRIPTION

The GNLU products integrate an ARINC 756 landing capability with a high integrity ARINC 743 GPS sensor. These units accept additional hardware and software modules to meet a variety of approach and enroute guidance needs. The GNLU-9x5M products are additions to the existing MMR product line, which has the following basic systems capabilities:

  • ARINC 756 compliant solution offering a consistent operational philosophy across the airline fleet
  • The ARINC 756 GNLU provides ARINC 547 approach and VOR navigation capability and ARINC 578 ILS approach capability.
  • Allows compliance with ICAO Annex 10 FM immunity requirements.
  • MMR outputs are switched between landing sensor types internal to the GNLU simplifying installation and sensor upgrades across the fleet.
  • Architecture supports wide area augmentation inputs
  • Supports RF LAAS data link using an integral VHF modem. Optionally, the design accepts a C band data link with the addition of the MLS landing capability and the acceptance of this standard by the industry.
  • ARINC 743 GPS Sensor Unit eliminates the need for a stand alone GPS receiver, and simplifies integration of the GNSS landing capability.
  • GPS software designed to meet DO-178B level A flight critical requirements.
  • Supports ARINC 615 data loading, simplifying return to service following software updates.

The GNLU-9x5M products add the following features:

  • An internal Marker Beacon capability to accompany the existing FM Protected VOR/ILS
  • MLS functionality including the enhancements necessary to operate with the TRN-45 Mobile MLS ground stations now used by the United States Air Force's Air Mobility Command.
  • Growth to internally incorporate future JPALS GPS Landing capabilities with NAVWAR considerations plus full civil compatibility.

Unlike other military or civil receivers, the Rockwell Collins GNLU family of MMRs utilize a unique "dual-threaded," high integrity, passive failure design that supports Category IIIb autoland requirements where a 10-9 probability of undetected hazardous failures is required. Through Rockwell Collins "dual-threaded" design, which utilizes both a primary and monitoring path in each receiver module, this stringent level of integrity needed to support CAT IIIb operations is, thereby, achieved with only two receivers. Additionally, with a "brickwall" design approach implemented between the various precision landing sensors, the Rockwell Collins MMR avoids the possibility of a fault in one function denying the use of other functions.

Like the airlines, military operators need the flexibility to operate at airports around the world utilizing various landing systems. The Rockwell Collins GNLU provides this flexibility by incorporating combinations of precision landing systems plus enroute GPS and VOR navigation into a single, integrated unit. The Rockwell Collins GNLU MMR supports TSO'd VOR, ILS, MB, MLS and GPS with growth capabilities to GLS, JPALS and NAVWAR. Such capabilities make the GNLU the MMR of choice for transports, tankers and other aircraft where maximum civil interoperability is desired. Additionally, the GNLU is fully supported by internal funding and by a large production base of units sold to major air carriers world wide thereby making it a true COTS solution. Furthermore Rockwell Collins, has extensive MMR integration and certification experience on numerous aircraft types, ensuring a smooth integration into new aircraft.
