TCN-500 (AN/ARN-153(V)) equipment is available on General Services Administration (GSA) contract.


OVERVIEW

TCN-500 (AN/ARN-153(V)) is the new technology airborne receiver-transmitter (RT) component of the Tactical Airborne Navigation (TACAN) system that replaces the ARN-118. TCN-500 and ARN-153 nomenclatures are often used interchangeably; however AN/ARN-153(V) is a military nomenclature applicable to some but not all TCN-500 RTs. The table of RTs below identifies RTs with military nomenclature by listing the RT type number (e.g. RT-1625) and including the national stock number (NSN) in parenthesis after the part number. To avoid misuse of the ARN-153 military nomenclature when describing an RT that has not been assigned military nomenclature, TCN-500 will be used.


DESCRIPTION

Just like its predecessor, the TCN-500 RT measures the slant-range distance and relative bearing to a selected ground station or an airborne beacon-TACAN, and computes velocity and time-to-go to that station. Unlike its predecessor a typical airborne system consists of four LRUs instead of five (5): an antenna, a cockpit control (same as AN/ ARN-118 controls), the receiver-transmitter (RT), and a mounting tray for the RT. The ARN- 118 D/A adapter function is contained within the TCN-500 RT when desired. To assure a seamless transition from the ARN-118 to the TCN-500, Rockwell Collins has carefully analyzed the current installations of the ARN-118. Based on this analysis, Rockwell Collins has identified those retrofit mounts required for the typical installations. These mounts provide, not only a "no aircraft wiring impact/drop in replacement" for the receiver transmitters noted, but also provide a basis for other "not identified" retrofits with minimal NRE to our customers. The TCN-500 has a flight inspection configuration (622-8149-022) is available for ground station parametric measurement. It is totally self-contained, and requires no additional external measuring equipment. For data collection, a typical configuration would include a PC, ARINC 429 PC interface card, interconnect cables and supporting application PC software. Rockwell Collins can supply a kit that includes these items. A Selectable Analog Interface TACAN (SAITAC) version of the TCN-500 (Part Number 622-8149-031) is available for installations that need analog drivers, but that have equipment such as GPS or INS which does not have analog drive capability. It can convert digital range, bearing, and flag signals from the driving system to the analog format required to drive HSI or BDHI instruments. The SAITAC eliminates the need for additional Digital to Analog converter equipment. It provides weight, space and power savings, while maintaining a simultaneous TACAN capability via the MIL-STD-1553B interface.

The TCN-500 has been successfully installed in cargo, fighter, bomber, trainer, and rotary wing aircraft for both the U.S. military services and for militaries around the world. The TCN-500 has been especially popular for aircraft avionics upgrade applications.

Test Equipment - 965T-1 Intermediate/Depot Test Set
Various options of test configurations are available depending upon individual user requirements.

The 965T-1 Test Set, when combined with a minimal number of user-supplied test equipment, is used for TCN-500 performance testing. The 965T-2 Test Set is used with the 965T-1 for added capability. There are also "turn-key" test stations available (TG-6046 Family) for those customers establishing Licensed Assembly and/or Organizational through Depot levels of repair.

The 965T-1 Test Set provides the means to control and monitor the operational function of the TCN-500 TACAN system. The test set is designed to test the following units as a system or independently: all of the receiver-transmitter options listed in this catalog, any of the control options, and the 938Y-1 Antenna. The 938Y-1 electronically-rotated antenna is not normally used with the TCN-500, but can be tested on the 965T-1 Test Set.

Turnkey Test Stations
Rockwell Collins can provide a number of turnkey test stations for the TCN-500 Tacan system that are tailored for Intermediate or Depot level maintenance. These test stations are contained in a three bay (I-Level) or four bay (D-Level) rack which contains all of the special and common test equipment required for all the desired level of maintenance. In addition, test stations can be customized for other applications such as license build programs to accommodate various factory test processes.

The following Figures illustrate the typical configuration of these test stations.

This test station is a four-bay station containing all the common and special test equipment required for Depot and Intermediate Level testing of the TCN-500 RT.
