OVERVIEW

The Rockwell Collins AN/ARN-147(V) is the United States Air Force Standard VOR/ILS Receiver, and is being installed in all USAF C-130, C-141, UH-1N, and C-5 aircraft.


DESCRIPTION

The AN/ARN-147(V) system, consisting of a receiver, control, and mount, combines all VOR/ILS functions -- VHF omni-directional range, localizer, glideslope, and marker beacon receivers -- into one compact, lightweight, low-cost set. It is the first militarized VHF navigation receiver to offer optional internal MIL-STD-1553B capability. The all solid-state AN/ARN-147(V) system is MIL-E-5400 class II qualified. International operability requirements are met by providing 50-kHz channel spacing for 160-VOR and 40-localizer/glideslope channels.

The digital and analog outputs are compatible with the latest high-performance flight control systems, digital indicators, and analog instruments. Both high and low level deviation and flag outputs for VOR/LOC and glideslope are provided per RTCA conventions. The synchro instrument driver is designed to accommodate a wide variety of RMI impedances to simplify aircraft retrofit. Performance to meet the FM Broadcast Immunity requirements of ICAO Annex 10 is available with part numbers 622-6376-014, -015, -019, and -20, or as a depot retrofit for part numbers 622-6376-004, -005, -009 and -010. Modular construction techniques enable quick access to all cards and modules to reduce repair time. Faults can be readily isolated to a replaceable module, and the AN/ARN-147(V) can be supported in either 2- or 3-level maintenance concepts. The AN/ARN-144(V) provides higher TO/FROM indicator voltage, elapsed time indicator and receive only VHF Comm from 118 to 127.95 MHz with 50-kHz channel spacing. The VIR-130A part numbers 622-6376-009, -010, -019 and -020 provide unique analog deviation outputs for use in rotary-wing aircraft that use analog Command Instrument Systems (CIS) processors.

VOR/ILS Test Set
The 966Y-2 Test Set provides for intermediate and depot level test and fault isolation of the AN/ARN-147(V), AN/ARN-144(V) and VIR-130A VOR/ILS Receivers. The test set has several features which are useful for field support.

Key Features
  • Two-of-five (ARINC 410) tuning provided by either VOR/ILS/MB RF Signal Generator or an appropriate control.
  • Using a VOR/ILS/MB RF Signal Generator with optional store-recall, up to 99 test steps can be stored for single keystroke execution, including automatic receiver tuning and antenna selection.
  • Interface to 1553 bus technology receivers.
  • In addition to front panel manual control, the RF signal source is automatically switched to Receiver VOR/LOC, GS, or MB inputs with the VOR/ILS/MB RF Signal Generator.
  • OBS resolver and compass functions provided by the 966Y-2.
  • Front panel mounted angle position indicator display of the receiver RMI output.

Signal Generator
Rockwell Collins is no longer in production of the 479S-6A, VOR/ILS/MB signal generator (part number 622-4127-00X) and recommends the following as a replacement:
  • BF Goodrich Aerospace, JCAir Test Systems Division NAV-2000R w/479S-6A Option (P/N 01-0520-70): the NAV-2000R-70 emulates the Collins 479S-6A Signal Generator and has both a ARINC 410 (Two-out-of-five tuning interface) and an IEEE-488 Interface.
  • IFR NAV-750C: use of the IFR NAV-750C Signal Generator requires a 313N-6C control head in the 966Y-2 test panel to provide the ARINC 2 of 5 tuning information to the radio receiver under test. Note that certain VIR-130A receivers (622-6376-001, 002, and 006) incorporated a communications band starting at 118MHz which is beyond the tuning range of some 313N-6C controls. There is no known implementation of this communication feature, however; if it is to be tested, 313N-6C control 522-4408-001, 002, or 004 must be used.


Ramp Test Set
Rockwell Collins is no longer in production with their Ramp Test Set, 972Q-4. As an alternative, Rockwell Collins recommends the IFR 4000.
