OVERVIEW
The HF-121C high performance radio system is designed for HF applications
requiring voice and data operations at 400W transmit power. Compliant with
the airborne requirements of MIL-STD-188-203-IA/STANAG 5511 for Link 11/TADIL
A, this 400 Watt PEP/Average power radio provides maximum performance for
airborne applications. The HF-121C has been optimized for tactical digital data communications
and simultaneous operation (SIMOP) of multiple radio sets with minimum frequency
and antenna separation. Embedded Automatic Link Establishment (ALE), Multimode
Modem, and ARINC 714-6 SELCAL decoder capabilities are also available. The basic radio set is partitioned into a receiver-exciter with integral
pre/post-selector on a mounting tray or common mounting tray, and a power
amplifier-power supply on a mounting tray or common mounting tray. The receiver-exciter
can be used independently of the power amplifier. A serial manual control
913Z-5, computer based serial control via RS-232, and/or MIL-STD-1553B is
available. Priority enable lines determine active control interface with 1553
bus requests for status provided when 1553 is not selected as active control. The HF-121( ) family of radios has been installed in commercial and
military aircraft in the United States and in foreign countries. It has been
selected as the standard HF radio by many aircraft manufacturers. Earlier
versions of the HF-121/121A/121B product line have received military nomenclature
designation of AN/ARC-153, AN/ARC-157, AN/ARC-191(V), AN/ARC-207(V), AN/URC-91,
and AN/URC-97(V) by the United States and AN/ARC-512 for other nations. Current
versions of the HF-121BD/C product line have received military nomenclature designation
of AN/ARC-243(V) by the United States Navy, AN/ARC-230 by the United States
Air Force (specific to the USAF E-3B/C platform), and AN/ARC-2201(V) and AN/ARC-512A(V)
for other nations.
DESCRIPTION System Applications
The HF-121C Radio Set is compatible with standard Air Transport Rack
(ATR) unit dimensioning. Each unit mounts in an equipment tray for ease of
removal and maintenance. The antenna coupler is a pressurized unit which may
be mounted in pressurized or non-pressurized areas of the aircraft.
The transmitter is capable of continuous transmission in all modes at
ambient temperatures up to +55° C at sea level. Modes
such as SSB voice which yield high peak to average power ratios (8 dB or greater)
will show no degradation in power output up to +55° C
and 50,000 feet. Short periods (1/2 hr) of operation up to +71° C
are permitted in all modes. A combination of mounting trays are available
which require external cooling air or contain integral blowers. A full line
of Wire, Probe, and Shunt Couplers are available from the AN/ARC-190(V) product
line. For combinations of duty cycle, peak-to-average power ratios, altitude,
and temperatures that exceed the thermal capability of the transmitter, the
power output will be gracefully reduced to a power level at which it can safely
operate without equipment damage. The basic receiver-exciter provides a software (software developed at
OEM) configurable I/Os which allow the system application to emulate a prior
installation for ease of retrofit without the need of large and/or expensive
adapters. Configurations have been developed for; P-3A AN/ARC-94 "618T"
replacement, CP-140 AN/ARC-512 replacement, VC-25A AN/ARC-207(V)3 replacement,
E-3( ) AN/ARC-165 replacement, E-2C AN/ARC-157 replacement, P-3C AN/ARC-161
replacement, and E-767 AN/ARC-207(V)9 replacement all without the need for expensive
aircraft re-cabling and/or adapter units. Configurations for new installations
have been developed for RC-135V/W, YAL-1A ABL, C-32A, and P-8A MMA. SIMOP Operation
The HF-121C Radio Set is designed to provide high performance operation
in the presence of collocated communication systems. A digitally tuned, four-pole
bandpass filter provides filtering in the receive and transmit path to optimize
the system’s Simultaneous Operation (SIMOP) performance
in collocated environments. Canada CP-140 (P-3C) with its 40 foot and 60 foot
wires providing as little as 1.5 dB of isolation are an example of a severe
SIMOP application with field proven success which is configured as a 1KW HF-121BD.
To achieve optimum receiver performance in a collocated situation, the
level of interfering signals must be reduced to an acceptable level relative
to the desired signal strength. The embedded preselector will improve performance in the areas of out-of-band
intermodulation distortion, cross-modulation, image rejection, IF rejection,
reciprocal mixing, and high voltage protection. When used in the transmit path, the bandpass filter is useful in reducing
the levels of the out-of-passband broadband noise, spurious outputs, and harmonics
that are generated in the receiver/exciter-modem. Link 11/TADIL-A
Link 11/TADIL-A is a digital data communication network interconnecting
dispersed elements of a task force that provides for the exchange of tactical
data among communication systems. The exchange of data uses a 2/16-tone composite
signal generated by the system’s data terminal set (DTS).
The HF-121C Radio Set has been optimized to provide compliance with
the signal characteristics of Link 11/TADIL-A as defined in MIL-STD-188-203-IA/STANAG
5511, Interoperability and Performance Standards for Tactical Digital Information
Link. Power is maximized per requirements at 400W peak with the peak to average
modulation of NLT 8.5dB maintained. The average power control between the
2-Tone and 16-Tone portion of the transmission is maintained at ~2dB per requirements. SELCAL
The HF-121C Radio Set provides an embedded modem for the demodulation
of selective calling waveforms compliant with ARINC 714-6. The SELCAL address
is selected from the 913Z-5 control unit, the 1553 bus controller, or RS-232
bus controller. The HF-121C also can be configured to provide a dedicated
AM demodulated audio signal in accordance with ARNIC 714-6 for use by an external
SELCAL demodulator.
Multi-mode Modem
The HF-121C Radio Set provides an embedded modem supporting the waveforms
of MIL-STD-188-110B and STANAG 4285. The waveforms of MIL-STD-188-110B include
the narrow and wide shift FSK, the serial (single tone) mode, Appendix C,
and Appendix F. A RS-232C sync and async data port is provide to interface
with an external data source.
Automatic Link Establishment (ALE)
The HF-121C Radio Set provides an embedded modem compliant with the
mandatory waveform requirements of MIL-STD-188-141B Appendix A and Link Protection
levels 0, 1, and 2 of Appendix B.
