Ground Radios

721S Family of ground-to-air radios
Rockwell Collins 721S VHF-UHF Family of Ground-Air-Ground Radios provides the customer a best-in-class, extremely broad range, VHF-UHF RF performance. The Software Defined Radio architecture and fully modular construction lend themselves to simplified maintenance and a wide range of cost-effective, easily implemented optional features. An industry standard Ethernet Remote Control interface permits full RT Control as well as 2-way Voice over IP (VoIP) and Push-To-Talk (PTT) transmitter keying over a single Cat-5 or Cat 6 Ethernet cable.

The Rockwell Collins 721S Family of Ground Radios represents a paradigm-shift in radio architecture, remote control, and remote management. The shift is made on two fronts: (1) the migration from proprietary RT control protocols and interfaces to open standards; and (2) the integration of functionality which has typically required 3rd party add-on devices such as VoIP gateways and Ethernet-to-serial converters. By leveraging industry-standard voice CODECs, protocols, interfaces, and operating systems, this radios control systems benefit from faster and easier upgrades ensuring continued superior interoperability.

721S radio options have been engineered to satisfy your specific VHF or UHF line-of-sight RF communications needs. A robust variety of features and capabilities are available to suit your immediate requirements. The modular radio hardware and flexible software designs also ensure that radios delivered today can easily be upgraded tomorrow to satisfy new customized performance targets well into the future.

721S Fixed Site Radio (FSR)
Rockwell Collins721S FSR High-power AM/FM VHF-UHF Radio Transceivers provide a flexible solution for stand alone receivers, transmitters or transceivers. The systems Ethernet-based command and control system employs open system standards to deliver superior interoperability.

721S FSR sets are designed to be fully configurable to satisfy your VHF and UHF line-of-sight needs and support multiple voice and data operating modes. The 721S FSR can be customized to provide AM and FM frequency coverage in any specific band up to a full 30-512 MHz. Frequency-agile EPM waveform options are available to meet specific performance targets. The radio sets can be upgraded for seamless interoperability with numerous frequency agile radio waveforms such as Have Quick I/II, TALON, TALON II, SATURN, and country unique waveforms.

The 721S FSR provides reliable long range communications and can be optimized for highly congested operational conditions. Flexible, robust control software with an intuitive user interface makes networking multiple radios and/or controllers exceedingly simple.

A full color display and software-definable touchscreen on the removable RCU-700 Radio Controller Unit provide an intuitive user interface for radio control and status along with voice audio and keying connections. When setup remotely, the RCU-700 utilizes a single standard 10/100 Based-T Ethernet interface for radio control, keying, status, and audio via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The system supports the installation of Ethernet encryptors between each network component for added security. A robust Microsoft® Windows® application is available for a standard IBM® compatible PC to allow 721S FSR sets to be controlled and monitored through an Ethernet connection or network.

721S SMART Blade Radio
The Rockwell Collins 721S SMART Blade Radio is based on modular "building block" architecture, which is easily scalable across varying sizes of Air Traffic Control requirements. The 721S SMART Blade Radio consists of small form-factor, modular, hot-swappable, TCP/IP-based RF transceivers and power amplifiers, integrated into a 19-inch rack mount chassis, in a Telco "blade server" type architecture. Each receiver-transmitter exhibits outstanding RF and cosite performance, eliminating the need for outboard filtering for all but the most extreme cosite conditions.

Each individual blade is comprised of individual modules and circuit boards mounted to an open blade chassis/frame. A blade is removed ("hot" without powering down the chassis) from its chassis with two captive thumbscrews. Removal of three, clearly marked, pendant cables enable rapid module removal without any special tools or equipment. Once isolated by the built-in diagnostics, the blades defective module may easily be replaced in the field with minimal training and basic hand tools. Defective modules are returned to the factory for repair or replacement. The rack chassis housing the blades provides only mechanical support and contains no electronics or interconnections.

721S SMART Blade Radio Special Features
The 721S SMART Blade Radio receiver-transmitter modules have a variety of enhanced capabilities that allows it to host firmware upgrades to implement new features and capabilities. These key features include:
  • Open architecture DSP board; allowing third party firmware development
  • Firmware upgrade in the field via the blades Ethernet port
  • Powerful TI TMS320 series processor available in different speeds and capacities with pin and software compatibility
  • Altera Cyclone III FPGA, available in various sizes and speeds, provides high speed preprocessing for wideband waveforms and sophisticated functions
  • Variable banks of SDRAM may be factory installed according to the application
  • Easily replaced DSP board allows field hardware upgrade

Of particular note are the self-test and diagnostic capabilities built into the SMART Blade Radio. Because the 721S SMART Blade Radio has separate receive and transmit translators that may be used simultaneously, and a full-duplex DSP card, the blade radio may be operated in the full-duplex loopback mode to test the complete signal path. Key to the self-test scheme is the built-in ability of the DSP card to perform the following functions:

  • Tune the receiver and transmitter to the same frequency (use calibrated leakage path)
  • Measure the absolute, calibrated (dBm) receive or transmit signal levels at key points in each module
  • Meter the forward and reverse output power, compute VSWR
  • Meter internal voltages at power supplies and key nodes
  • Generate a transmit test tone
  • Control individual switch points to isolate failed modules via alternate path tests
  • Remotely report monitor and diagnostic activities and results

The single band 10W blade weighs less than 4.6 kg (10 pounds), while the dual band 10W or single band 50W blade weighs up to 6.8 kg (15 pounds) due to the extra modules installed. Each blade is approximately 150mm (6 inches) high, 64mm (2.5 inches) wide, and 560mm (22 inches long).
