OVERVIEW

The Collins RMI-30/36/BDI-36 Radio Magnetic Indicators display aircraft heading information on a calibrated servo driven compass card. Bearing to either Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) or VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR) stations is provided by two pointers; each read against the compass card.


DESCRIPTION

The RMIs provide aircraft heading information on a calibrated servo driven compass card read against a fixed lubber line. A heading flag monitors servo error, compass valid and instrument power. Bearing to either ADF or VOR stations is provided by two pointers, each of which is read against the compass card. Each pointer may be switched independent of the other to a separate ADF or VOR receiver by an annunciated pushbutton switch.

There are two identical channels in the indicators to drive their respective pointers. Each channel in the RMI-36 and BDI-36 can accept ADF or VOR in either three-wire (x, y, z) or two-wire (sin/cos) form. In the RMI-30, each channel can accept VOR in two-wire (sin/cos) form and ADF in three-wire (x, y, z) form.

There is a monitoring circuit in the indicators that accepts a voltage from the ADF and navigation receivers and parks the respective pointer at the three o'clock position in the absence of this voltage input.

The RMI-30 and RMI-36 operate in conjunction with an ADF receiver, a navigation receiver and a compass system.

The BDI-36 is basically an RMI-36 with dual distance displays. These displays indicate distance for two independent Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) stations. Each display has three digits and indicates distance to the nearest tenth of a mile below 100 miles. Each display has a DME HOLD annunciator. The RMI and DME electronics are functionally independent.
