OVERVIEW
The next-generation Collins Pro Line 21 CNS radio sensors are designed
to replace the Pro Line II radios currently in production. These sensors
include a VHF transceiver, a VOR/ILS/Marker Beacon receiver, a DME transceiver
and an ADF receiver. Additionally, a radio interface unit (RIU) provides concentration
of data to and from the radio sensors, data communications management and
audio concentration and management.
DESCRIPTION
The Pro Line 21 CNS radio sensors retain the same form factor as the
current products (3.3 inches high, 14
inches long) but have reduced widths that allow size reductions of up to 50
percent and weight reductions of up to 35 percent. Collins Pro Line 21 CNS maintains the same electrical interfaces as
the products they replace, allowing them to fit into existing installations
with a minimum of modification to the existing aircraft wiring. These legacy
interfaces duplicate the operation of today's products. For new installations
the radios provide high-speed I/O buses which interface with the RIU. These
interfaces allow use of new features such as software data loading, enhanced
maintenance reporting, digital audio, data communications management and data and
audio concentration. Collins Pro Line 21 CNS incorporates digital receiver and exciter technology
that greatly increases flexibility for future growth and updates. The VHF
communications transceiver is capable of Mode 2 VHF data link operation and
has growth capability to Mode 3. The ADF and VOR/ILS functionality is available as individual LRUs and
as a single LRU combining both functions. The receiver and processor modules
in the combined LRU are identical to those of the individual LRUs. The functions
do, however, share a common power supply in the combined unit. The following table shows the type numbers of the new products along
with the unit it will replace: VHF Communications
Transceiver | VHF-422 | VHF-4000 | VOR/ILS
Receiver | VIR-432 | VIR-4000 | DME Transceiver | DME-442 | DME-4000 | ADF
Receiver | ADF-462 | ADF-4000 | NAV Receiver (Combined VOR/ILS/Marker
Beacon/ADF Receiver) | VIR-432/ADF-462 | NAV-4000 | Communications
Management Unit | None | CMU-4000 | Radio Interface Unit (w/ CMU) | None | RIU-40X0 | Radio
Interface Unit (w/o CMU) | None | RIU-41X0 |
Size Comparison
The following table compares the sizes of the new products with the
products they will replace. Total volume saving for a typical shipset (dual
VHF, dual VIR, dual DME, and ADF) will be approximately 711 in3 (53
percent).
VHF Com | 3.8 x
14 x 3.3 | 2.3
x 14 x 3.3 | 351 | 212 | VHF
Nav | 3.8 x 14 x 3.3 | 1.9
x 14 x 3.3 | 175 | 88 | DME | 4.9 x
14 x 3.3 | 2.3
x 14 x 3.3 | 452 | 212 | NAV
(ADF + VIR) | 7.6 x 14 x 3.3 | 2.3 x 14 x 3.3 | 351 | 106 | | | TOTAL | | 1329 | 618 |
Weight Comparison
Along with the size decreases there is a corresponding weight decrease.
A typical shipset (dual VHF, dual VIR, dual DME, and ADF) weight saving of
approximately 11.4 lbs. (35 percent) is anticipated.
VHF Com | 4.7 | 3.5 | 9.4 | 7.0 | VHF
Nav | 4.5 | 3.0 | 4.5 | 3.0 | DME | 5.3 | 4.0 | 10.6 | 8.0 | NAV
(ADF + VIR) | 8.4 | 3.5 | 8.4 | 3.5 | | | TOTAL | | 32.9 | 21.5 |
Pro Line II/Advanced Radio Interchangeability
Since the Pro Line 21 CNS products have the same form factor as the
existing products they may be mounted in the same location. New mounting trays
will replace the existing trays including new mating connector shells. The
mating connectors will be different, but the insert pins are identical permitting
individual connections to be moved by removal from the existing shell and
insertion into the new shell. No new aircraft wiring is required in order
to maintain the same level of capability as the Pro Line II radios.

TYPICAL SYSTEM
Pro Line 21 CNS can be configured to the requirements of nearly any
aircraft, from twin-engine turboprop aircraft through widebody jets, depending
on aircraft requirements. System configuration is aircraft specific. Please
contact Rockwell Collins to discuss specific requirements.
