KEY OWNER/USER BENEFITS Pro Line 4 integrated capability Automated system lowers pilot workload Increased situational awareness provides higher level of safety Designed for regional market 1000 company routes with 100 waypoints each Full sized, scratchpad-based CDU Preferred and direct routing Reduced cost of ownership Full primary and secondary flight plan management Predictive fuel and time performance management Ability to fly RNAV and GPS non-precision approaches System growth to precision approach
OVERVIEW
The Rockwell Collins FMS-4200 Flight Management System is designed specifically
to meet the needs of the demanding regional airline environment. The FMS-4200
supports flight planning from origin to destination with information that
is logical and easy to understand. The system is available in single or dual installations. When installed
in a dual configuration, the system allows synchronized or independent operation.
Secondary flight plans, direct-to routing, Departure Procedures (DPs) and
Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STAR) procedures, non-precision approaches,
time and fuel performance predictions, automated radio tuning, advisory VNAV,
eyes-up maps and company routes are a few of the system's capabilities. Integrated with Rockwell Collins Pro Line
4 avionics, situational awareness is enhanced through reduced pilot
workload. Flight planning and navigation information is presented on Pro Line
4 Multifunctional Display (MFD) pages in front of the flight crew, allowing
them to remain eyes-up during all phases of flight.
DESCRIPTION
Pilot interface with the FMS-4200 is via the CDU-4100 Control Display
Unit. The CDU-4100 contains an ARINC style keyboard, 12 line select keys,
22 functions keys and a full alphanumeric keyset. The full-size keyboard provides
direct access to functions used most often and allows full control of the
FMS. The scratch pad-based design allows for easy movement of information
from point to point. This method of data entry benefits airline operators
by reducing the number of keystrokes per operation. By requiring fewer keystrokes, heads-down
time is reduced, leaving more time for other flight deck operations during
high workload phases of flight. The CDU-4100 has the optional capability to function as a Multifunctional
Control Display Unit (MCDU) controller. If selected, the CDU controls ARINC 439 systems such as ACARS, AFIS® and
Satcom. The Rockwell Collins FMC-4200 Flight Management Computer is a line replaceable
module housed in the Pro Line 4 Integrated Avionics Processing System (IAPS).
The computer provides 16 megabytes of memory to support the FMS logic, full
performance information, company and pilot routes and 10 megabytes of navigation
database memory. The Rockwell Collins DBU-5000 Database Loading Unit is utilized each
28 days to load the navigation database into the computer using a USB memory
device. The DBU-5000 is available as an installed unit or as a standalone
unit. Each customer can select the DBU-5000 option which matches their operational
needs. Installation of the Rockwell Collins GPS-4000S WAAS-enabled Global Positioning
System sensor provides GPS navigation en route and allows the use of GPS approaches.
OPERATION AND PERFORMANCE
The FMS-4200 is designed for all phases of flight - takeoff,
en route, approach and landing. Complete lateral navigation and vertical guidance
is provided, including the ability to fly complete airways, DPs, STARs, parallel
offsets and approaches legs. Up to 1000 standard company routes, each with
up to 100 waypoints, can be stored with the navigation database. Comprehensive
flight plan progress information is provided on both the CDU and MFD. Full
predictive fuel and time management is included for both the primary and secondary
flight plans as well as the route to an alternate airport. Engine thrust management
provides climb and cruise N1 information to the flight deck. VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR), Distance Measuring Equipment
(DME), Inertial Reference System (IRS), Attitude Heading Reference System
(AHRS), Instrument Landing System (ILS) and GPS sensor management is available.
The FMS-4200 integrates with the aircraft equipment complement to determine
the most accurate navigation solution. Crew-selectable automatic and manual
radio tuning modes enhance pilot control of the navigation process. In addition,
sensors can be readily selected or deselected for use in the FMS navigation solution. A number of features help maximize aircraft operational effectiveness.
Insertion of a waypoint into the flight plan and direct waypoint routing are
easy to perform. Flight plan edits can be reviewed prior to being accepted
or canceled. Parallel offsets, route to an alternate, direct routings, waypoint
insertions and up to four holding patterns can be evaluated for correctness
prior to activation. The flight plan can be reviewed as ATC level language
(FPLN) or as waypoints (LEGS). A second flight plan or route to an alternate destination
can be inserted for alternate use. Advisory vertical information provides cues to aid aircraft management
in the vertical dimension. Vertical information consisting of top of climb,
top of descent, vertical constraints and descent rates are displayed on the
CDU and MFD. When descending or climbing, advisory vertical cues are provided
on the Primary Flight Display (PFD). The PFD cues include a glideslope cue,
vertical speed target and next vertical constraint. The dedicated Pro Line 4 MFD provides a north-up planning map and heading-up
progress map. The north-up planning map is available to assist with flight
plan generation and flight plan evaluation. The progress display allows the
flight crew to monitor the flight plan progression. High-and-low level navaids, airports, terminal waypoints, Non-Directional
Radio Beacon (NDB) intersections can also be displayed on the progress map.
Numerous text pages are provided to allow progress, navigation sensor status,
position summary and Long-Range Navigation (LRN) status information to be
displayed heads-up. The progress map can also be integrated with a text window that displays
relevant progress and advisory VNAV information. The combination of text and
map on a single display allows for accurate eyes-up monitoring of the flight
while continuing to display map data. Situational awareness is further enhanced
by displaying Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System or weather radar
overlays.
