weather radar and sensor source selection on a single display MFD provides a shared data information window without disrupting
ADI/HSI display modes Two-, three-, four- and five-tube configurations available 5 x 6-inch formats Compatible with FCS-85 series and AHRS-85 Compatible with EGPWS for bolt-on applications that utilize
GPSs and on-board global terrain databases to provide pilots with a picture
of the terrain in front of them
OVERVIEW
The EFIS-86E electronic flight instrument systems combine Electronic
Attitude Director Indicator/Electronic Horizontal Situation Indicators (EADI/EHSI)
with a center panel multifunction display (MFD) to provide a fully integrated
flight deck display system. The EADI expands the horizons of a conventional
five-inch electromechanical instruments with a 50 percent larger earth/sky
representation for terminal and en route formats. The EHSI combines multiple
display formats with weather radar and built-in NAV source selection for simplified coordination
of all navigation and weather avoidance tasks. The MFD augments the EADI/EHSI
displays by providing the pilot and copilot with additional navigation, weather
avoidance, data management and reversionary functions.
DESCRIPTION
The EFIS-86E is comprised of a family of components that can be configured
to meet various flight deck display applications. The system components are: CHP-85D/86B Course Heading Panel
The CHP-85D/86B provides course and heading select functions, selection
of time-to-go, ground speed, elapsed time and true airspeed.
DCP-85E/G Display Control Panel
The DCP-85E/G provides navigation sensor selection, EHSI format selection,
bearing pointer selection as well as weather and preset course from a second
navigation source or course transfer function on the EHSI. Decision height
can be selected for the EADI. Display dimming control is also provided.
DSP-85( ) Display Select Panel
Alternate to DCP-85E/G and one CHP-85D/86B for flight deck where space
is limited. Slightly different features than DCP/CHP combination. Requires
external dimming and stopwatch controls.
DPU-86S Display Processor Unit
The DPU-86S provides the necessary deflection and video signals for
up to two EFD-86s. It contains aircraft systems Input/Output (I/O) interface
and comparator warning functions.
EFD-86/86A Electronic Flight Display
The EFD-86/86A provides a multicolor 5 x
6-inch CRT instrument display of an EADI or an EHSI with a lighted
inclinometer.
MFD-85( ) Multifunction Display
The MFD-85( ) provides a multicolor CRT instrument display of weather
radar, pictorial navigation map, page data, waypoint definition, display of
multiple waypoints and remote data.
MPU-86S Multifunction Processor Unit
The MPU-86S provides the necessary deflection and video signals for
the MFD. It is similar to the DPU except it has expanded I/O capability for
a second set of aircraft systems.
WXP-85C/850A Weather Radar Panel
The WXP-85C/850A provides weather data outputs required for the display
of weather radar information on the MFD and either EHSI.
WXP-85D/850B Weather Radar Panel
The WXP-85D/850B provides weather data outputs required for the display
of weather radar information on the MFD and either EHSI.
The EFIS-86E can be configured in two-, three-, four- or five-tube systems,
depending on the flight deck application. (See tables for system totals and
equipment complement) The EFD-86 and MFD-85( ) contain a CRT, deflection yoke, video and deflection
amplifiers, and high voltage power supply. The CRT is a high-resolution color
tube. The CRT has an in-line gun with shadow mask that uses a black matrix
surrounding pigmented phosphor dot trios; this provides high contrast along
with high resolution. A custom design, multiband pass optical filter is used
to provide enhanced contrast. Both stroke and raster scanning techniques are
used to provide large area color background for weather and distinct alphanumerics and
symbols with high brightness. Mode select and display control functions are
located on the display bezel for the MFD-85( ). EADI
The EADI display provides an ADI presentation that can include the following
(with defined sensor inputs):
Aircraft attitude and flight control system steering commands VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR), tactical air navigation
system, Area Navigation (RNAV), Lateral Navigation (LNAV), Microwave Landing
System (MLS) azimuth or localizer, deviation Glideslope, MLS glidepath or preselected altitude deviation Flight control system mode annunciation Autopilot engage annunciation Attitude source annunciation Marker beacon annunciation Radio altitude Decision height set and annunciation Fast-slow deviation or angle of attack deviation Indicated airspeed Commanded airspeed Airspeed trend vector Preselected altitude alert Excessive Instrument Landing System (ILS) deviation (Category
II configurations) EHSI
The EHSI display has two basic modes: full compass rose and compass
sector. The full compass mode presents compass rose similar to existing electromechanical
instruments. Information available in this mode includes the following (with
defined sensors inputs):
Compass heading Selected heading Selected VOR, localizer, MLS azimuth or LNAV course and deviation
(including annunciation of deviation type) Navigation source annunciation Digital selected course/desired track readout Excessive ILS deviation (when Category II configured) Heading source annunciation ILS and heading comparator warnings (ILS only if Category
II configured) To/from information back course localizer annunciation Distance to station/waypoint Glideslope or Vertical Navigation (VNAV) deviation (VNAV not
available when certain statuses of the DSP are used) Ground speed, time-to-go, elapsed time or true airspeed Course information and source information from a second navigation
source Weather radar target alert Waypoint alert when LNAV or RNAV is the navigation source Bearing pointer driven by VOR, LNAV or ADF sources
OPERATION AND PERFORMANCE
The EFIS-86E provides system operational capability in the event of
the failure of a system element. The following paragraphs describe this capability
with reference to any operational differences that may be required. DCP-85E/G Display Control Panel Failure
In the event of a DCP-85E/G failure, an external switch can be actuated
that will cause the entire system to be controlled by the opposite side DCP-85E/G.
DSP-85( ) Display Select Panel Failure
In the event of a DSP-85( ) failure, an external switch can be actuated
that will cause the entire system to be controlled by the opposite side DSP-85(
).
EFD-85/86 Electronic Flight Display Failure
In the event of an EFD-86 failure, external switches can be actuated
to cause either the EADI display to transfer to the EHSI in composite format
or the EHSI to transfer to the EADI to form the same composite format and
an EHSI format to transfer to the MFD-85B. The display to the other EFD will
be turned off.
DPU-86S Display Processor Unit Failure
In the event of a DPU-86S failure, an external switch can be actuated
that allows the MPU-86S multifunction processor unit to provide the control
to the affected EADI and EHSI. Since the MPU-86S has access to the DSP-85(
) or DCP-85E/G display control panel controlling the failed DPU-86S, no degradation
in EADI or EHSI performance occurs. When the MPU-86S replaces a DPU-86S, the
MFD-85B displays either an EHSI or composite format.
MFD-85( ) Multifunction Display Failure
In the event of a MFD-85( ) failure, there is no complete backup capability
for the display. The NAV and weather modes are available for display on the
EHSI.
MPU-86S Multifunction Processor Unit Failure
In the event the single MPU-86S fails, external switching of the digital
bus lines is required to maintain cross-side data on either side EADI or EHSI.
Backup drive capability for the EFD is lost as well as the MFD-85( ) display.
The weather radar modes are still available on the EHSI.
