OVERVIEW
The Collins Automatic Direction Finder ADF-60A combines Pro Line performance
and compactness. Simplified installation, compatibility with existing radio
magnetic indicators and easier operation make the ADF-60A the best choice
for updating ADF capability.
DESCRIPTION
With the ADF-60A only one coaxial cable is required between the ANT-60A
integrated loop/sense antenna and the receiver. While the ADF-60A cable length
is not critical, other systems require special cable lengths for proper matching.
This is taken care of in the ADF-60A with a solid-state RF amplifier built
into the antenna. Quadrantal error correction that usually requires an additional
system component is accomplished in the ADF-60A receiver by proper connection
of programming pins in the mating connector. Other features that make the
ADF-60A an advanced ADF design include a stable, single-crystal frequency
synthesizer, crystal filter rejection of adjacent frequencies, dual-conversion
IF and coherent phase detection to minimize bearing errors. Put in an operational situation, all these features contribute to superior
ADF performance. Tuning is in 0.5 kHz steps,
and a capture range of ±0.25 kHz enables full coverage so that the
ADF-60A can pick up stations even if they are not precisely on the assigned
frequencies. When used with a CAD-62, the ADF-60A can be controlled with
a Pro Line II CTL-62. The ADF-60A takes the guesswork out of ADF. The coherent detector determines
whether a weak signal is reliable for navigation. When the signal is below
a usable level, the coherent detector causes the bearing pointer to swing
to a horizontal parked position. Any audio output is silenced to further verify
the unreliable signal condition. Tone identification of an unmodulated carrier signal is another improvement
over standard ADFs with beat frequency oscillators. When pilots select a frequency
and activates the 1,000 Hz tone, they
immediately know whether they are receiving an unmodulated carrier. The ADF-60A receiver has conventional three-wire AC synchro outputs
for standard RMIs. In addition to eliminating all electromechanical components,
the ADF-60A receiver design features modular construction. All components
are fully accessible for bench service without the use of extender cables. An optional dual element antenna, the ANT-60B, is also available to
even further simplify the installation of dual ADF-60A systems. This antenna
combines both loop and sense functions for two ADF-60A systems within one
housing. If desired, the ANT-60B can also be used with single ADF-60A installations.
