KEY OWNER/USER BENEFITS Proven and reliable technologies Flexible and scalable to meet airlines' current and future
cabin entertainment functionality High bandwidth to deliver data and video content to provide
connectivity and full aircraft AVOD Ease of maintenance
OVERVIEW
With the successful TES in-flight entertainment (IFE) system as its
foundation, Rockwell Collins continues to make significant advancements in
technology that deliver high-quality content and bring connectivity to twin-aisle
aircraft. The result of this ongoing commitment is the introduction of eTES.
With eTES, passengers enjoy all the benefits of TES like AVOD and interactivity
now with the same high-speed network connectivity they enjoy at home and in
the office.
DESCRIPTION
Like all Rockwell Collins systems, eTES is designed to be a valuable,
easy-to-use addition to your aircraft that will provide the capability to
grow as future needs dictate. eTES uses proven industry-standard cable modem
technology to deliver a wide variety of content choices to your passengers.
All with the bandwidth to support the seat capacity of any twin-aisle aircraft,
including aircraft now flying or on the drawing boards. Rockwell Collins
achieves this by using state-of-the-art hardware that is significantly smaller and
lighter than previous systems. In full-aircraft audio/video on demand (AVOD)
installations, eTES reduces the total number of head-end line replaceable
units (LRUs) by two-thirds. This results in substantial savings in weight
and power requirements. Other eTES enhancements include Windows*-based servers and clients.
In this environment, simultaneous access to the high-speed network is available
to every seat on the aircraft. The server runs Microsoft Windows Server 2003
and the Internet Information Server (IIS) application. Windows CE running
at the seats can provide the familiarity of Internet Explorer for easy passenger
navigation. The use of Microsoft products allows for rapid integration of
third-party applications. The eTES system is designed to reduce crew workload. For example, multiple
control stations can be located throughout the cabin. From these easy-to-use
terminals, flight attendants configure the mode of content delivery, including
AVOD, near VOD (NVOD) and/or distributed video with just a few keystrokes. Whether traveling for business or for pleasure, passengers want to experience
the same access to information and entertainment, delivered on board with
the same speed they are accustomed to at home and in the office. TES was the
first IFE system to use Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signal modulation.
Now, eTES is the first IFE system to expand this use of proven technology
by adopting the proven broadband cabin industry standard Data Over Cable Service
Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) Level 1.1 into its Ethernet network. eTES
can provide data delivery bandwidth up to an amazing 1.6 Gbps. Separately,
eTES delivers bandwidth to support full-aircraft AVOD with an unprecedented
menu of entertainment choices to each seat with bandwidth to spare. The eTES network can deliver both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 AVOD. eTES makes
it easy to deliver a variety of options to passengers. Airlines can select
to offer any combination of overhead video, in-seat video, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2
AVOD, intranet, e-mail, Internet, interactive games and telephone all introduced
as plans dictate. With eTES, airlines can choose the functions that best meet their needs
today with assurance that the system capability grows as content delivery
needs evolve. From movies and games to e-mail and the Internet, eTES lets passengers
manage their time. They choose from what they want, when they want it. What
makes their capability even more attractive is the ease in which each passenger
can access content. eTES uses Internet Explorer, the computer industry-standard, as the
guide for each passenger choice. The system provides dynamically built menu
pages. Menu choices are generated based on each request, creating a truly
individualized passenger experience. For example, all eTES pages will be
created in French, if that is the language selected by the passenger. Or
banner ads for Paris-based restaurants and tourist attractions can be automatically
generated should the flight’s destination be Paris.
All of this information is dynamically generated by eTES. Passengers are in complete control to select from the options provided
to them. Movie title, language choice, start, stop, fast-forward, rewind and
pause controls are all at their fingertips. Not only will passengers enjoy
content delivery the way they want it, but airlines will also know exactly
what they are listening to and watching. eTES collects usage statistics to
assist airlines in determining an optimal content mix, thereby minimizing
content costs and maximizing passenger satisfaction. eTES can electronically transport
passengers anywhere they want while they travel anywhere in the world. System configuration is aircraft specific. Please contact Rockwell
Collins to discuss specific requirements.
