OVERVIEW

Rockwell Collins Tailwind 560 multi-region TV system allow airline operators to offer live TV programming to keep passengers informed and entertained while flying. Designed for the airline market as a result of Rockwell Collins' multi-region TV product success in the VIP market, the Tailwind 560 represents a breakthrough in airborne TV.

The Tailwind 560 is a fully integrated system that enables aircraft to receive Ku-band DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) television signals, providing access to the full spectrum of digital video and audio programming currently available from DBS satellites. The system receives these signals, automatically decodes them to the correct broadcast format and then distributes them to the cabins in-flight entertainment system (IFE).

The Tailwind 560 TV System is a stand-alone system that supports integration with the airlines selected IFE systems. It utilizes a standard RS-485 interface, simplifying the task of integration. System integration will require that the IFE System supplier / system integrator design and implement the software communication interface to the IFE system for the passenger to access TV menus, etc. Rockwell Collins will provide the documents necessary for system integration and will actively support the integration of the Tailwind 560 system with the IFE system and supplier of the airline choosing.

DESCRIPTION

The Tailwind 560 is an innovative, high-tech solution that offers reliable performance while flying across regions and tracking satellites in remote areas of the world. By partnering with leading satellite TV service providers, Rockwell Collins provides airline operators in specific regions, a select choice oflive TV content to offer their passengers for viewing.

When traveling long distances, different television broadcast zones are crossed. Tailwind 560 monitors aircraft location via the aircraft navigational equipment and uses advanced multi-region auto detection technology to switch television receivers to acquire new signals and keep content flowing.

Due to receiver size, atmospheric conditions and geographic locations, one of the toughest challenges of aircraft television reception has always been on-ground performance - a problem that now has a solution. Tailwind 560 provides reliable performance and quality viewing options - in the air and on the ground. The heart of Tailwind 560 is a rugged, state-of-the-art fuselage-mounted antenna. Unique in the industry, this four-horn array antenna is equipped with sculpted polymer lenses to ensure maximum signal reception. The antenna rotates 360 degrees, while pivoting -10 to +90 degrees for the greatest "up/down" look angle of any competing solution. Its high dynamic reaction rate enables it to move two to three times faster than other antenna to keep it locked on the broadcast satellite. All of which means that when the aircraft is banking and climbing, or during taxi, takeoff and landing, the antenna remains locked on the signal, providing uninterrupted TV viewing.

Tailwind 560 is a world-class, airborne TV and is the most advanced and reliable multi-region airborne TV system in the air. And the technology is only part of the equation. With a network of Rockwell Collins Service Centers backing the system worldwide, airline operators can have the confidence knowing that they are never far from the most customer-focused support team in the industry.

OPERATION AND PERFORMANCE

The Tailwind 560 system enables aircraft to receive DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) television signals, providing access to the full spectrum of digital video and audio programming available from DBS satellites. Onboard the moving aircraft, the FMU (Fuselage Mounted DBS antenna Unit) aligns with the DBS satellite (in geosynchronous orbit) by acquiring position and information from the avionics busses that are connected to the SSP (System Signal Processor). After acquisition, the information is processed and translated into signals sent to the antenna's azimuth and elevation steering motors. Received RF signals are transferred to the SSP via coaxial cables. The SSP down-converts the RF signals and sends them to the CPIF (Control Power and IF Splitter). The CPIF fans out IF, power, and 485 control signals to the Receiver Decoder Unit Eight (RDU8). It accepts Wide Frequency AC power and works at 115VAC from 60Hz to 800Hz. Each passenger in every seat of the aircraft can then control up to 32 independent tuners to select an individually chosen program channel.

The Rockwell Collins Tailwind 560s operational features and benefits include:

  1. Multi-region Service Coverage - Satellite television services are available for reception for select regions of the world. Airline operators may be required to meet licensing requirements for programming content in supported regions.
  2. Automatic Operation -Tailwind 560 reads the current aircraft position and attitude from the aircraft attitude reference system. It uses this information and its configuration to control the antenna pointing direction, tuning frequencies, polarization and which IRDs to activate.
  3. Entire Ku-band DBS Spectrum - Tailwind 560 operates with signals over the entire DBS part of the Ku-band (10.7 GHz to 12.75 GHz).
  4. Broadcast Polarization and Format Compatibility - Tailwind 560 operates with both circularly polarized DBS signals (for CONUS) and linearly polarized DBS signals (for other regions). It decodes two digital broadcast formats, Digital Satellite System (DSS) and Digital Video Broadcast (DVB).
  5. System Power - Tailwind 560 operates on 115 VAC from the aircraft which is supplied to the CPIF. The CPIF in turn supplies 28 VDC to the Tailwind 560 system, including the SSP and RDU8.
