Stock Flight Systems — Pitts S2B Challenge: Michael Stock of systems integrator Stock Flight Systems needed a small Inertial Navigation, Global Positioning, Air Data, Attitude, Heading and Reference System (INS/GPS/ADAHRS) system to integrate with his flight control position sensors and ARINC 825 interface. The challenge was that he needed the product in-house, integrated and flight-tested in time for the Aerospace Testing Expo deadline that was rapidly approaching. Solution: Because of the small size, light weight, high performance and best overall value of the Micro INS™, Michael Stock chose to move forward with testing the product. After Mr. Stock received the Micro INS and support materials, he integrated it with his product in a test aircraft and was up and flying within 24 hours. The flight was conducted in a Pitts S2B research aircraft. The Micro INS was packaged together with a microcomputer system that also acquired the flight control positions and transmitted all data via a CANaerospace data bus. Data recording was performed using a Linux laptop computer with CAN interface in the front cockpit. Mr. Stock flew the entire flight sequence using aerobatic maneuvers to check the Micro INS' capabilities during highly dynamic flight. Results: The results showed that the Micro INS was able to deliver excellent attitude and heading information through all of the aerobatic maneuvers and settled to new attitudes extremely quickly. With a high performance solution tested, proven and ready for demonstration at the Aerospace Testing Expo, Mr. Stock was pleased with his selection of the Micro INS. |
