FIRST grants

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), 2009-2010 season

At Rockwell Collins, we recognize the value of forming positive relationships with students who will become the next generation of engineers and innovators. That is why we are teaming with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to dramatically increase FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams throughout Iowa and across the nation.

Funding for a limited number of FLL and FTC teams in Iowa will be available through Rockwell Collins FIRST grants. The grants place a special emphasis on teams that have not participated in the past, teams that include minority students and females and teams from schools with a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunch programs. Funding levels will vary and may include amounts to cover the cost of the robot kit, registration, field setup kit, or a combination of items.

Application Process
Teams must complete the online application to be eligible for the grants. This must be completed before the team registers with FIRST.

Teams that have been approved for funding will be given a unique 'code' that must be used during the FLL or FTC registration process. The code will allow eligible teams to receive a waiver of fees associated with participation. Teams will be expected to pay a portion of their own costs.

Teams eligible for these grants must have an affiliation with a school or 501c(3) non-profit organization (for example, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Boys & Girls Club) and be located in the state of Iowa.

Team expectations
Grant recipients must agree to the following:

  1. All participants on the team are between the ages of 9-14 (for FLL) and 12-18 (for FTC). Teams should include at least 5 and no more than 10 members.
  2. The team will meet at least weekly throughout the season.
  3. Coaches will participate in a training session for coaches.
  4. The teams will participate in a tournament, which may be a regional or championship event.
  5. The coach will be responsible for managing the team and participating in a post-season evaluation.

Approved Teams
Teams will be notified of their grant status via email within fifteen (15) business days of submission of the grant application. Approved teams will be emailed instructions for registering and ordering materials. Once notification is received, teams will be required to register with FLL or FTC within thirty (30) days.

Registration Process
Teams that have been approved for funding will be given a unique 'code' that must be used during the FIRST registration process. The code will allow eligible teams to receive a waiver of fees associated with participation. Teams should NOT register with FIRST prior to receiving this code as this will disqualify them from grant eligibility.
