Community Involvement: FIRST

First

The anchor of Engineering Experiences is a partnership with FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a nonprofit organization coordinating multinational programs that team professionals and young people to solve engineering design problems in intense and competitive ways. Our partnership includes team and tournament sponsorships, teacher training and rewards, and Rockwell Collins employee and retiree involvement. FIRST is present across the United States and around the globe, making these programs available to nearly any Rockwell Collins employee who would like to be involved.

In FIRST® LEGO® League, our engineers assist elementary and middle school students in building unique robot inventions by using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors and gears. Rockwell Collins has committed to growing the number of FIRST LEGO teams in Iowa and in Rockwell Collins communities across the United States, to involve and inspire more students.

FIRST Tech Challenge, for high school students, combines the project approach of FIRST LEGO League with the excitement and innovation of FIRST robotics. Students work in teams to design, test and program larger-scale robots. Rockwell Collins supports teams and tournaments throughout Iowa and Rockwell Collins communities across the United States.

At Rockwell Collins, we recognize the value of forming positive relationships with students who will become the next generation of engineers and innovators. That is why we are teaming with FIRST to dramatically increase FIRST LEGO® League and FIRST Tech Challenge teams throughout Iowa and across the nation.

Funding for a limited number of FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge teams in Iowa will be available through Rockwell Collins FIRST grants. The grants place a special emphasis on teams that have not participated in the past, teams that include minority students and females and teams from schools with a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunch programs. Funding levels will vary and may include amounts to cover the cost of the robot kit, registration, field setup kit or a combination of items.
