CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Apr. 20, 2017) – Rockwell Collins has announced the recipients of this year’s Green Communities grants, a program that helps fund environmental projects that benefit the communities in which Rockwell Collins operates. Since 2004, the company has awarded 534 grants valued at $977,895 through the program, typically ranging from $500 to $2,500 to each group.

“One of the goals of the program is to encourage employees to get more involved in their local community by volunteering,” said Shawna Burkhardt, community relations specialist for Rockwell Collins. “It’s great to see such a willingness from employees to do what they can to help improve the environment.”

With the world’s pollinator populations in freefall during the past few decades, providing places for bees and butterflies to feed and reproduce was a common agenda among multiple grant groups this year. The Winneshiek County Conservation Board in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, for example, will be working with Rockwell Collins employees to plan and plant an acre of land that will become a prairie park for pollinators to help them flourish in the area.

“We are excited to partner with Winneshiek County Conservation in this community initiative,” said Thomas Hauber, senior environment, safety and health specialist at Rockwell Collins. “After project completion, we also hope to organize events at the park to encourage folks to use the space and learn more about pollinators and their importance.”

To apply for a Green Communities grant, a qualified non-profit organization or public/government entity must team with a Rockwell Collins employee or retiree. Grants were awarded by a review committee based on the following criteria:

  • Participation in the project by Rockwell Collins employees and/or retirees
  • Tangible environmental benefits of the project
  • Sustainability of the project benefits
  • Completion of the defined portion of the project within the calendar year of the grant award
  • Agreement to participate in publicizing the grant and the completed project
