Rockwell Collins is the prime contractor and systems integrator for the U.S. Air Force KC-10 Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) cockpit modernization program. While responsible for all aspects of the upgrade program, we will also provide the Flight Management System (FMS), displays, data link communications and surveillance capabilities for the fleet of 59 aircraft. The program will deliver technology that ensures the KC-10 fleet meets current and future CNS/ATM requirements, giving it the ability to operate in military and commercial airspace throughout the world. These new capabilities will enhance mission effectiveness, and allow the aircraft to arrive at its destination in less time using less fuel.
Rockwell Collins will provide the following systems for the KC-10 Tanker aircraft:
- Satellite and VHF communications equipment for controller pilot data link communications
- New cockpit displays to replace mechanical attitude display indicators
- New FMS, control display units and inertial navigation units to meet stringent CNS/ATM navigational requirements
The KC-10 aircraft is an Air Mobility Command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for U.S. armed forces. Although the aircraft’s primary mission is aerial refueling, it can combine the tasks of a tanker and cargo aircraft by refueling fighters and simultaneously carrying fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments.
With the 2011 award of this program Rockwell Collins is now the primary avionics provider for all U.S. Air Force tankers, building on our strong tradition of success providing integrated avionics solutions for military aircraft. By leveraging key avionics and communications developments across its commercial and military businesses, applying commercial-off-the-shelf technology and an open systems approach, we are able to provide our customers with best value solutions.
